Why sizes differ between countries

There is no single international standard for clothing sizes. A US women's 8 is a UK 12, an EU 40, an Italian 44 and a Japanese 13, and each system evolved from different body measurement conventions. On top of that, brands cut differently for their own target customer, which is why two size M shirts rarely fit the same. Conversion charts get you to the right neighborhood, and the brand's own chart gets you to the right size.
