Agentic Commerce

Shopping where an AI agent discovers, compares, and completes purchases on the shopper's behalf.

What is agentic commerce?

Agentic commerce is online shopping carried out by an AI agent acting on the shopper's behalf: the user states an intent ("a waterproof running jacket under $150, size M"), and the agent searches catalogs, compares options, and can complete checkout, all inside a conversation.

The concrete version arrived with assistant-integrated shopping: ChatGPT's shopping results and Instant Checkout for Shopify merchants, Perplexity's buy-with-one-click, and Google's agentic features in Search and Shopping. Instead of the shopper visiting ten stores, one agent queries structured product data from all of them.

What changes for merchants

  • The product feed becomes the storefront. Agents read structured data (titles, attributes, prices, availability, reviews), not page design. Clean, complete feeds win placements.
  • Discovery shifts from keywords to answers. Being recommended by an agent replaces ranking for a query; content that directly answers product questions gets cited (sometimes called generative engine optimization, or GEO).
  • The product page still matters for confidence. Agents handle finding and buying; visual confidence (does it fit me, does it suit me) still requires the shopper, which keeps experiences like virtual try-on relevant as the human checkpoint in an automated funnel.

Agentic vs. conversational commerce

Conversational commerce (chatbots answering questions) assists a human who shops. Agentic commerce inverts the role: the human sets constraints, the agent shops. The difference is who performs the actions.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Does agentic commerce replace the online store?

Not in the foreseeable future. Agents intermediate discovery and checkout for intent-driven purchases, but inspiration-driven shopping, brand relationships, and try-before-you-buy confidence still happen on the merchant's own surfaces.
